The Mining Industry Skills Centre (MISC) has opened a new office in Mackay.
MISC CEO Derek Hunter said the relocation to the new premises had been driven by a need for the organisation to expand operations and capabilities.
“Over the past 18 months the Mining Industry Skills Centre has been growing rapidly and expanding its services,” he said.
“It is well known that the resources sector is currently in the midst of a resources boom and resulting skills shortage.
“The expansion of our Mackay office into the new premises will allow us to continue to grow and have the capabilities to assist more organisations within the resources sector, as well as making a valuable contribution towards addressing the skills shortages in the industry.”
Currently the team at the Mackay office are heavily involved in the development and implementation of several key projects including the Bowen Basin Skills Strategy, The Generic Induction Program, The Mining Transportability Scheme, The Mine Readiness Program as well as the extremely valuable consultancy services.
The aim of the Bowen Basin Skills Strategy is to engage industry and local stakeholders to collectively improve the workforce quality and sustainability for the mining industry. This project is complementary to the Mining Industry Skills Strategy.
The Generic Induction program offers an efficient and cost effective means of reducing the duplication of onsite training. In collaboration with the state government and industry, the Mining Industry Skills Centre developed the Generic Induction training program as a way of inducting non-permanent mine-site employees.
The Mining Industry Transportability scheme plays a vital role in streamlining the mine site reassessment process and allows for transportation of skills from mine site to mine site.
The Resource Sector Work Readiness program aims to provide school leavers (and other inexperienced personnel) with an accelerated pathway into productive work within the resource sector.
The Consultancy Services provided by the Skills Centre offers organisations within the resources sector access to leading information on training trends, drivers, methods and innovation from across the various industry sectors via the Centre’s highly qualifies consultants.
The Mining Industry Skills Centre is a not-for-profit organisation formed as a collaborative venture between the mining industry and the government.
The aim of the organisation is to establish a centre of excellence for the development and implementation of training initiatives in the industry.
