Lighting Council Australia today commenced operation as a Canberra-based, incorporated peak industry association for the lighting industry.
The Council has appointed Bryan Douglas as its Chief Executive Officer. Mr Douglas was formerly Deputy Chief Executive of the Australian Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (AEEMA) and brings considerable experience in senior management roles in national industry associations.
Lighting Council Australia’s Chairman, Russell Loane, said that Australia’s lighting industry, with a turnover of $1.25 billion, had reached sufficient critical mass to support a robust and influential association.
“I am confident that Lighting Council Australia will be highly effective in promoting the interests of Australia’s lighting industry”, Mr Loane said.
Mr Douglas said that the lighting industry had a critical role to play in mitigating greenhouse gases and lessening the effects of global warming.
“Lighting Council Australia will engage closely with the Australian Greenhouse Office and other Australian and international agencies to promote energy efficiency in lighting applications”, he said.
Mr Douglas said that key issues for Lighting Council included:
· working with the Australian Government on the phase-out of inefficient lamp technologies
· assisting members comply with regulatory requirements, in particular Australia’s EMC framework
· contributing to the reform of Australia’s electrical safety regulatory regime
· contributing to Australian and international technical lighting standards
Previously Lighting Council Australia operated as a forum of the Australian Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (AEEMA). Lighting Council Australia thanks AEEMA for past services to the lighting industry.
