New iron ore port opens in Geraldton

Gindalbie Metals has opened new iron ore export infrastructure at Geraldton Port.

The $200 million facilities opening comes ahead of the miner's subsidiary Karara Mining's first production of magnetite concentrate from the Karara mine.

The facilities themselves consist of a 300 m storage facility, a dedicated berth, and a new 5000 tonne per hour ship loader.

Dubbed the Karara Export Terminal, and located next to Mt Gibson Iron's storage, it is capable of handling up to 16 million tonnes per annum of magnetite concentrate or hematite DSO.

Its terminal comprises of a dedicated 4th railway line inside the port, which connects the new facilities with the Karara mine; a twin cary rotary dumper, as well as the aforementioned ship loader.

Gindable managing director Tim Netscher added that "this is a sophisticated iron ore terminal, which has a number of significant advantages and which includes the only rotary car dumper currently in the port.

"These facilties reflect an investment of more than $200 million in the Port of Geraldton by Karara."

It is part of the miner's wider integrated mine, rail and port logistics chain, which was first used last month.

It was opened yesterday by WA premier Colin Barnett and transport minister Troy Buswell.

The two congratulated Gindalbie on its opening of the state's Mid-West region.

“The company has made an important investment in the future of the region, and of WA," Buswell said.

“The project generated more than 1,500 construction jobs and will create 500 operational positions, as well as indirectly employing 300 people in the Mid-West.”

Barnett added that these expanded facilities at Geraldton will aid in the expansion of the region will the Oakajee Port is still being established.

“Oakajee Port will accommodate Cape Class vessels, much bigger than those using Geraldton Port, and be better able to support Karara’s targeted production of 30 million tonnes per annum,” he said.

“This provides huge impetus to the development of the region, creating a fully integrated logistics pathway that will help to unlock the region’s resources, creating employment, opportunities and numerous positive economic benefits for communities across the Midwest,” Netscher added.
