New CFMEU-led ‘super union’ to go ahead, gets FWC approval

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has approved the formation of a new union between the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), Textile Clothing & Footwear Union of Australia (TCFUA) and Maritime Union of Australia (MUA).

The union of the three separate bodies, which has been referred to as a ‘super union’, received overwhelming support when the idea went to a vote last November.

The three bodies will amalgamate to form a massive trade union movement to further protect workers in relevant industries from inequality and associated big business interventions.

“It’s time for big business to stop riding on the coattails of everyday working Australians, time the banks stopped ripping people off, and time for every business in this country to pay tax,” said CFMEU national secretary Michael O’Connor. “Nearly 700 big corporations pay no tax, which is a national scandal.”

Paddy Crumlin, the international president of the new union, said the decision by the FWC represented a recognition of trade union rights, and that it represented an important renewal.

“Wherever there is a need to defend the interests of Australian workers, we will be there with them in their workplaces and communities,” he said.

The group’s first meeting is due to take place this Friday, March 9.
