Mt Gibson to sue over ‘catastrophic’ wall collapse

Mount Gibson Iron is suing the engineers responsible for building the Koolan Island mine seawall, which collapsed last year, flooding the mine.

The main pit of the Koolan Island hematite operation flooded late last year after pit wall instability combined with high tide night caused a section of the wall to collapse.

The incident resulted in the shut down of the mine and 200 workers being made redundant.

Now the miner, and its subsidiaries, have lodged a writ against engineer GHD, blaming it for the seawall failure, Perth Now reports.

According to the writ, Mt Gibson’s lawyers stated GHD entered into a contract to provide design, construction, maintenance, and rectification of the seawall and associated structures.

GHD declined to comment on the matter.
