Queensland’s Mines Inspectorate has released a safety alert following the recent death of a mining worker after being struck by the right hand hopper door of a mobile crushing plant.
The Mines Inspectorate issued a number of recommendations after the incident, including implementing a system whereby risk management is used to determine the need for development of written work instructions before commencing a task
The safety alert also recommended mines use a risk management process, varying from a formal Risk Assessment to the use of a system such as Take Five or Stop Look Assess Management (SLAM), before conducting a task to ensure an acceptable level of risk is achieved.
According to the Mines Inspectorate, all mines must implement a process that ensures workers have the necessary supervision to achieve an acceptable level of risk.
Mines must also review their induction process to ensure it complies with all legislative requirements, including training in, and utilisation of, risk management techniques, the Mines Inspectorate said.
Regular reviews of training and assessment processes, as well as ready availability of maintenance manuals were also recommended.
