Mineral Resources (MinRes) has announced it will donate $500,000 to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund Appeal (LMDRF) to help communities affected by the Kimberley floods.
The LMDRF has been established to coordinate donations in response to Western Australia’s floods, dubbed the worst the state has ever seen.
All money raised is going directly to those who need it most.
MinRes has a long history of giving back to the community, including in times of need, and is providing this contribution on top of existing commitments, including the $50 million committed to the WA Resources Community Investment Initiative announced late last year.
“The sheer scale of this one-in-100-year event has been shocking,” MinRes founder and managing director Chris Ellison said.
“Our thoughts are with the communities who have suffered devastating damage but shown incredible resilience.
“As a proudly Western Australian company, MinRes is determined to do what we can to help. I hope this donation will support those in need on the path to recovery.”
MinRes has three iron ore hubs in the WA regions of the Yilgarn, Pilbara and Ashburton.
The flood waters originating from former tropical cyclone Ellie have left towns and communities isolated, with WA Premier Mark McGowan warning that recovery efforts will “take some time”.
People left out of work because of the disaster in Victoria Daly, Broome, Derby West Kimberley, Halls Creek and Wyndham East Kimberley are now also eligible for the disaster recovery allowance.
