Mining leaders address challenges

Leading mining industry professionals will gather in Mount Isa (Queensland) this week to address the current and future challenges facing the industry.

Professionals drawn from the exploration, mining, processing and industry service sectors, and academics and students from across Australia and New Zealand will represent their colleagues at the annual congress of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

The AusIMM is the leading institute representing minerals industry professionals and the congress is an important event on the mining calendar.

This year The AusIMM Congress will be held from Friday 22 May to Sunday 24 May at the Red Earth Hotel, Mount Isa Queensland, and will focus on the theme ‘Maximise Services, Minimise Risks.’

AusIMM Chief Executive Michael Catchpole describes the annual congress as a unique forum that brings mining leaders together to discuss ways in which they can influence the technical, social and political development of their industry.

“Congress 2009 is hosted by the North West Queensland Branch of The AusIMM, and participants represent the diverse interests of The AusIMM, including regional branches, student chapters and committees representing the disciplines of geology, mining and metallurgy.

“The AusIMM”s Board and policy committees are also strongly represented and will guide discussion on a range of industry-specific issues.

“Delegates will also consider measures to assist AusIMM members adversely affected by the current economic climate and the likely impacts of economic factors on the delivery of services to all members.”

Preceding Congress 2009 will be the first ever regional Mount Isa women in mining networking event, to take place on the evening of Thursday 21 May, at the Terrace Gardens Function Centre.

Following Congress 2009, The AusIMM Annual General Meeting is to be held on the morning of Sunday 24 May.

The AusIMM has expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the employee who died in an accident at Xstrata’s George Fisher mine at Mount Isa earlier this week.
