Miner loses fingers

An Illawarra coal miner has lost three fingers in an accident at BHP’s Dendrobium mine.

The incident, which occurred last month, saw the miner lose his thumb, ring, and pinky fingers after they became trapped between a coal tram and the mine’s face, according to the ABC.

The man, in his 40’s, was hospitalised and has since been recovering at home.

The incident is under investigation by BHP, the NSW Department of Trade, and the CFMEU.

In 2010, a number of miners were lucky to escape injury after a section of the roof collapsed at Dendrobium.

The mine is part of BHP Billiton’s Illawarra Coal operations, and includes the Appin and Westcliff mines.
