Metallica Minerals’ Urquhart bauxite project gets federal approval

Metallica Minerals has received federal environmental approval for its Urquhart bauxite project in Queensland, setting it on track for development.

The federal government approved the project, located 5km southwest of Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula, in accordance with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

Metallica is now awaiting state government approval for the mining lease and environmental authority, as well as a separate approval for the haul road linking the project to the established port infrastructure at Hey Point.

Metallica CEO Simon Slesarewich said the federal approval was a key milestone.

“[It] clearly demonstrates that the environmental plan developed for the project is sustainable and meets best practice standards as determined by federal authorities,” he said.

“We look forward to receiving Queensland state government approvals and transitioning Urquhart into production.”
