THE Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has released a manual handling safety report following an incident on a wire towing sling.
A coal mine worker was injured when a wire towing sling was towed into position by a light vehicle to recover bogged equipment.
The wire towing sling was then manually handled into position to attach to the bogged equipment. The wire towing sling moved unexpectedly, causing injury to the coal mine worker.
Stored energy in the wire towing sling was not identified in the manual handling SOP, training, or by the coal mine worker, according to the safety report.
The DME said all coal mines need to ensure that manual handling procedures and training includes identification of stored energy.
