Macmahon poised to secure contract for Byerwen coal mine

Macmahon has been chosen as the preferred mining contractor for QCoal’s Byerwen coal mine near Glenden in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

QCoal notified Macmahon of its intention to enter into exclusive negotiations for the mining services contract, with the selection subject to the granting of mining leases.

Macmahon will begin mobilising, with the proposed contract set to include the full range of open cut mining and bulk earthworks related services for at least three years.

Macmahon CEO, Michael Finnegan, said the company was “very encouraged” to be selected for Byerwen mine.

“This is a quality project which will deliver significant benefits to the local and state economy,” he said.

“While there is still a lot of detail to be negotiated, we are buoyed by our selection as preferred contractor, which highlights our ability to compete for desirable new projects.”

Finnegan added that if the company secures the contract, it will signal Macmahon’s return into Queensland’s coal market, after completing its Cameby Downs contract in 2013 and the Eaglefield contract in 2014.
