Envirostream has signed an exclusive battery recycling agreement with Industrea Mining Equipment, a Wabtec subsidiary.
The agreement commences on January 1 2025 and is for an initial three-year term with an optional one-year term.
It will see Livium recycle lithium- and nickel-based batteries used in Wabtec’s FLXdrive battery locomotives, set to operate in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
As per the agreement, Livium will receive a fee for sorting and processing Wabtec-manufactured batteries and a fee for supplementary services such as battery dismantling, discharging, transport services and condition assessments.
“We are excited to announce this agreement with Wabtec Corporation, a market leader in the rail and mining sectors globally,” Livium managing director and chief executive officer Simon Linge said.
“This represents a significant milestone for Livium as it secures exclusive access to batteries from the locomotive industry, which diversifies our battery supply.”
Livium said volumes of batteries to be recycled are expected to increase over of the agreement’s term as more FLXdrive battery locomotives are added to the Pilbara fleet.
“As Wabtec introduces new products, such as the FLXdrive battery locomotive, we continually evaluate our component life cycles and leverage additional recycling opportunities to reduce landfill use and conserve natural resources globally,” Wabtec regional senior vice president ANZ (Australia and New Zealand) and SEA (southeast Asia) Peter Thomas said.
“Livium’s expertise and track record supports Wabtec’s effort to drive responsible operations of our products and enables us to properly handle the afterlife batteries.”
Envirostream has exclusive recycling agreements with Infinitev, Hyundai Glovis, LG Energy Solution and Volvo Group Australia.
