Leaders of tomorrow

OZ Minerals has brought together 12 young people from some of Australia’s most remote regions at its Young Leaders Forum at its Century mine in Queensland.

Facilitated by strategic management consultants, The Right Mind, the Forum was a five day workshop which brought young people from Mornington Island, Doomadgee, Normanton, Mount Isa and Burketown, designed to help them develop their leadership and governance skills.

According to OZ Century General Manager John Lamb, the Forum came about after recommendations in the recent Ten-Year Review of the Gulf Communities Agreement (GCA) as a way that Century could help local communities.

“Despite the tough economic climate, we remain committed to continuing to support local communities,” he said.

“One way that we can do this is to help develop the voices of tomorrow, the next generation of Gulf leaders.”

Sascha Bee from Normanton attended the Forum and said that it encouraged her to build on her existing leadership skills.

“The Forum has given me confidence, self-esteem and awareness,” she said.

“It made me aware of the skills and talents that I already had, but didn’t have a name for as well the different rules and frameworks involved in governance.”
