A NEW non-entry technology can improve mine safety and efficiency, according to the Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies (QCAT) and CSIRO’s annual report.
The remote controlled method called ROES runs a vertical shaft through the ore body to the base of the mining area.
According to the CSIRO, mining development costs are reduced because access is only required at the top and base.
The 2006-2007 report also discussed a mine communication system for real-time risk management which will allow the underground coal mining industry to utilise the ethernet-based communications system.
Research projects with Chinese partners are attempting to combat climate change by investigating coal mine methane capture and utilisation.
Each project will aim to reduce emissions and improve efficiencies right through the coal cycle.
