John Howard to headline 2019 Diggers & Dealers

Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard has been named as the keynote speaker for the 2019 Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Howard, a staunch supporter of the mining industry’s value to Australia, was the country’s second longest serving Prime Minister, holding the position between 1996 and 2007.

The 79-year-old will speak on the first day of the event, which runs from August 5 to 7.

Howard is the most recent Australian PM to complete a full-term in office. He visited Kalgoorlie-Boulder three times during his tenure (2001, 2004 and 2007).

The former Prime Minister comments that he “vividly recalls visiting Kalgoorlie as Prime Minister, and that the mining industry has been the backbone of the wealth of modern Australia.”

Howard was a member of parliament for 33 years and Treasurer during Malcolm Fraser’s tenure as Prime Minister between 1977 and 1983.

Diggers & Dealers chairman Nick Giorgetta said Howard would be a highlight of the 2019 program.

“Mr Howard’s overview of the state of Australia’s political landscape since his retirement will be a topic of interest as will his view on the outlook for Australia’s placement in the world with the shifting dynamic between the super powers of America, China and Russia,” Giorgetta said.

“Mr Howard is uniquely qualified to deliver an educated overview of the economic implications for the resources industry as a result of trade treaties, international relations and domestic political changes given he maintains a strong interest in current activities and commentates to this day.”
