With longstanding branches in New Zealand, Fiji and France, Terrain Tamer has a proven history of success in overseas markets.
These international endeavours have given the company the confidence to accelerate its export strategy, with the business more than doubling its overseas warehouse footprint in recent years.
Founded in 1969, Terrain Tamer now operates 19 branches, including nine international locations, supported by a dedicated global stockist network. Together, these operations export Terrain Tamer 4WD parts to more than 80 countries worldwide.
Since 2018, the company has established branches in Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Chile, with its most recent expansion into the United States in October 2024.
US expansion
The opening of the Stockton, California branch marks a significant step into the North American market. Led by George Esterer – former owner of California-based Cruiser Brothers and a Terrain Tamer reseller for more than a decade – the new operation is already gaining traction across the region.
Terrain Tamer chief executive officer Brent Hutchinson said the timing was right to establish an on-the-ground presence in the US.
“We’ve had wholesale customers in North America for almost 40 years, but to do our brand justice, with more than 60,000 product lines, we needed our own operation,” Hutchinson said.
“The US has consistently ranked as the third-highest source of visitors to our website globally, even without a physical presence.”
Hutchinson said the company had reached a point where it could meet the pace of development demanded by the US market.
“It may seem strange after 55 years, but we’ve only recently become ready for the rapid product development the US requires,” he said. “Entering this market means adapting our range to suit vehicles such as the Dodge Ram, Ford F-150 and F-250, as well as the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra.”
Hutchinson said Esterer and his team were a natural fit for the business.
“George, Roark and their team have deep knowledge of the North American 4WD market and strong, long-standing customer relationships,” he said.
“We understand the challenge of taking an Australian brand into the American market, but we’re excited by the opportunity and encouraged by the results since opening.”
Early in the process, Esterer travelled to Terrain Tamer’s Melbourne head office for on-site training with the management team, ensuring a strong understanding of the company’s culture and operations, while preparing to adapt the model to local conditions.
Esterer’s long-standing advocacy for the brand has paid dividends, with the Stockton branch exceeding initial projections despite broader industry headwinds.
Further growth is expected as brand awareness increases and customer relationships continue to strengthen.
Establishing a global presence
The US, however, is not the only market where Terrain Tamer has established successful new operations.
In recent years, the company has opened three branches in Papua New Guinea – two in Port Moresby and one in the major cargo port city of Lae.
These branches have seen strong uptake, supported by Papua New Guinea’s robust agricultural sector and extensive mining network. Terrain Tamer now supplies operators that rely on its parts for their entire light vehicle maintenance requirements.
Opened in early 2023, Terrain Tamer South America, based in Santiago, Chile, has also proven successful. The region’s reliance on heavy-duty vehicles, strong mining industry and deep-rooted passion for four-wheel driving have driven early momentum.
Participation in mining trade fairs and industry expos has further strengthened brand exposure across Latin America, supporting relationships with stockists and brand ambassadors.

Terrain Tamer has also developed strong ties with Austrade and the Victorian Government. Victorian Government trade pavilions have provided valuable business development opportunities and a prominent platform to showcase Terrain Tamer’s solutions for mining, tactical fleets and other 4×4 applications.
The Chilean team’s efforts delivered several record-breaking sales months last year, with year-on-year growth forecast to exceed 50 per cent by the end of 2025.
The branch’s official opening was celebrated with an event attended by 4WD industry identity John ‘Roothy’ Rooth and Australian Trade and Investment Commissioner Alvin D’Almeida.
The Victorian Government’s senior trade and investment director for Latin America, Natalia Gorrõno, has worked closely with the Chilean team, led by manager Simon Torrealba.
“Terrain Tamer has been the fastest-growing company we’ve had the pleasure of working with in recent years,” Gorrõno said. “The growth achieved has been impressive.”
Opened in 2020, Terrain Tamer’s Cape Town branch services mining and 4WD communities across southern Africa. Like Stockton, the operation is managed by a former Terrain Tamer dedicated stockist, Marinus Potgieter.
Hutchinson said establishing the South African operation during the Covid period was particularly challenging, with much of the setup conducted remotely.
“The road conditions, driving speeds and mechanical training requirements have tested our product development team,” he said.
“However, those challenges have strengthened the range, driving clearer instructions, greater over-engineering and a reassessment of long-held assumptions. A recent two-week trip through Namibia and Botswana allowed us to push the capability of the range and see it perform at its limits.”
The Cape Town branch has since been embraced by the sub-Saharan 4WD community as a premium alternative to the largely price-driven local aftermarket.
From humble beginnings
Global expansion is a far cry from the company’s beginnings, when founders Frank Hutchinson and the late Don Kyatt started the business with just $300 each in Melbourne’s south-east.
Frank Hutchinson remains managing director, with son Brent serving as chief executive officer. The founding ethos of service, innovation and quality – forged through decades of solving real-world outback 4WD challenges – continues to underpin the business.
Today, Terrain Tamer’s catalogue includes more than 60,000 unique part numbers across suspension, brakes, bearings, clutches, filtration, radiators and cooling systems, as well as engine, transmission and driveline components.
Every product undergoes extensive research, development and testing to ensure it meets or exceeds original equipment standards before carrying the Terrain Tamer name.
Drawing on more than five decades of experience, Terrain Tamer continues to support customers operating in some of the world’s harshest environments across agriculture, emergency services, military and mining, where reliability is critical to minimising downtime and preventing costly or dangerous failures.
