HWE Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Leighton Contractors, has been awarded a five-year contract extension worth approximately A$400 million at the Orebody 23/25 mine near Newman in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
The contract extension at BHP Billiton’s Orebody 23/25 mine will see HWE Mining continue to provide complete mining services at the operation until June 2013.
Craig Laslett, Executive General Manager of Leighton Contractors’ Resources Division, said that HWE Mining’s contracts in the Pilbara region, including Orebody 23/25, represented a significant part of the company’s national mining business.
“Orebody 23/25 is a key mining operation for BHP Billiton in the Pilbara, and HWE Mining has been the major mining services provider at the mine for over 10 years,” Laslett said.
“The contract extension at Orebody 23/25 will enable HWE Mining to continue providing a range of services at the mine, including specialist fixed plant maintenance and mining services that will support and add value to its future development.”
Laslett said today’s announcement was also positive news for HWE Mining employees and the wider Pilbara community.
“Through our work with BHP Billiton, HWE Mining has been involved in the Pilbara region for many years and the contract extension at Orebody 23/25 gives us an opportunity to continue to contribute to the safe and sustainable operation of the mine,” Laslett said.
“This is a very pleasing outcome especially for our employees at Orebody 23/25, many of who live in
Newman, as well as the wider community.”
HWE Mining first commenced operations at Orebody 23/25 in 1998.
