Production Technician with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Lenny Smith, has developed a simple, flexible and effective way to reduce risk at Iron Ore’s Port Operations.
With help from the Shift Maintenance team, Lenny designed hangers to keep hoses off the floor and prevent anyone from tripping.
“The hose hangers help with house-keeping issues, because previously hoses were often left lying on the walkways causing potential trip hazards,” D Shift Supervisor Mick Towie explained.
Normally hoses are placed on reels, but this is not always possible in areas with restricted movement.
“The great thing about the hose hangers that Lenny thought up is the fact that they can be moved as needed or fixed permanently in one place,” Mick said.
“They can be used anywhere around site, and we’re seeing more and more work crews making use of them.
“This is a great example of our people taking the initiative and thinking of simple ways to make our workplace safer for everyone,” Mick said.
Lenny’s hose hangers are also a good example of BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s “5S” program in action.
5S is a house-keeping programme that stands for sort, set in order, shine, standardise, and sustain. The aim of 5S is to reduce waste and optimise productivity by maintaining an orderly workplace.
