Leader of the Australian Greens, Bob Brown, want a senate enquiry into the impact of undersea mining.
Brown made the announcement to the ABC upon his return from Papua New Guinea, where he me with Environment Minister Benny Allan and members of the PNG Greens part.
Papua New Guinea is the first country to have undersea mining projects.
Brown said he is concerned about the environmental impacts the Solwara One gold and copper projects would have, which he said is using new robot technologies to mine the sea floor.
"Which is something that’s going to, if it works there, and Singaporean vessels are currently involved in experimenting with that, may extend to oceans elsewhere around the world and of course, the dumping from the process metals there is going to be left on the sea floor as well," he told the ABC.
"It’s a very, very worrying direction for mining to be taking."
The Greens have been vocal about their opinion that all mining should cease in Australia, with renewable energy sources used in its place.
Brown attracted a barrage of criticism in January, when he linked the devastating Queensland floods on climate change caused by coal mining.
