The Federal Government has renegged on a $5 million grant to the Mining Industry Skills Centre for the Simulation Research Development and Training Centre awarded by the previous Federal Government in October 2007.
Federal Minister for Resources and Energy Martin Ferguson said that the Federal Government had been reviewing all projects that were approved, but not as yet contracted prior to the calling of the Federal election.
He said there would be no grant forthcoming for the Centre.
Skills Centre CEO Derek Hunter said that although the Skills Centre was disappointed to learn of the Federal Government decision, the team at the Skills Centre was committed to moving ahead with the Simulation Research Development and Training Centre project.
“While we are disappointed with the decision, we remain committed to this project and to simulation training for the resources sector which we see as vital in ensuring a sustainable, skilled workforce for the future,” he said.
“We will continue to discuss this project with both the Federal and State Governments and key stakeholders and we look forward to highlighting its importance, not only to Queensland and Mackay but to the future of the entire Australian resources industry.”
