Former Rio CEO commended

A former Rio Tinto CEO has been awarded The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy’s (AusIMM) highest honour for his global leadership in the minerals industry.

Leigh Clifford was chosen for the AusIMM Institute Medal for his service with the Rio Tinto group and active promotion of professional development.

The Medal also recognises Clifford’s contribution to sustainable development and efforts to advance Indigenous employment.

Clifford will be presented with the award at the AusIMM’s Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation on 05 July at the Gold Coast in Queensland.

AusIMM chief executive Michael Catchpole said the awards celebrate the essence of leadership, ethics and professionalism and recognise outstanding contributions from individual professionals.

“Award recipients stand out in that they have applied their professional and technical

expertise to make a wide ranging contribution to their industry and community,” he said.

Matthew Gill will also receive an award for his leadership in the emergency rescue operation at Tasmania’s Beaconsfield Mine in 2006.
