Flexible child care needed

CHILD care support is the key to increasing female participation in the mining industry, according to a peak body representing mining professionals.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (the AusIMM) has endorsed comments made by Liberals backbenchers to make work related costs of child care tax deductible.

“For industries such as mining, where rosters are highly varied people and workers often relocate away from their family support networks, a wide array of child care is needed,” the AusIMM senior policy coordinator Monika Sarder said.

A recently released report on Attracting and Retaining Women in the Australian Mining Industry found that starting a family was the most common reason women leaving mining, largely due to lack of access to affordable child care.

The AusIMM says increasing the participation of women in the workforce is one measure to meet current and future skills needs.
