Fire threatens mines

Bushfires are threatening the Loy Yang Power station in Victoria’s Gippsland region.

It is feared the fire in the Strzelecki Ranges will reach the station’s open-cut coal mine and possibly the station itself. Last night, the fire reached a bunker and stopped, sparing the station for the time being.

The fire has so far made no impact on electricity supplies, however, the ABC reported that Energy Minister Peter Batchelor was being briefed on the fire situation at the coal-fired power station and preparing for the worst case scenario.

Loy Yang power station supplies one third of the State’s power requirements.
