As the capability for underground coal mining increases, companies are looking to mine difficult seams that were once thought uneconomical.
To service this need, Bucyrus has developed a new more compact continuous miner to tackle these seams.
Weighing in at approximately 61 tonnes, the new Bucyrus 25C continuous miner integrates the rugged features of the 25M series while adding new technological enhancements.
The 25C features the latest machine control system with large transmitters.
A new generation hydraulic system features pressure and flow on demand as well as fewer components.
It is equipped with a 164kW variable frequency drive (VFD) traction control for higher speeds and greater control as well as greater torque to ground control, which combined with the machine geometry facilitates cross cut turning.
Both the hydraulic and VFD systems provide the miner with greater overall machine protection.
It operates a broad range with maximum rated cutting head power.
The machine comes with two 205kW cutter head motors and is the most powerful continuous miner in its class.
The cutter head motors are protected by a torque limiting clutch which prevents damage in the event of a rock strike.
The high strength steel drums feature 5.1 cm thick walls with a maximum bit tip standoff.
The compact continuous miner is designed to operate in tunnels with heights of between .86 to 3 metres in low to mid seams with hard cutting conditions such as rock inclusions.
The robust main frame of the machine uses 75mm steel plates, which according to Bucyrus are 50% thicker than its direct competitors.
The heavier, rigid frame of the machine allows for more efficient cutting when sumping at the top of the seam and ripping to the bottom.
Its support frame is fabricated from high strength steel and has massive steel legs measuring approximately 15.25cm thick.
Having not only the largest in class boom pivot bores, the continuous miner also features hardened steel pins and replaceable bushings.
The 25C has a 96.5cm conveyor which provides higher throughput with bi-directional discharge forming an integral part of the main frame.
An hydraulic take up maintains proper chain tension for all conveyor positions and extends chain life.
