Driving the mining sector ‘mini boom’ in Queensland

The Mine Spec 4WD specialist team at FleetCrew are powered up for Queensland’s forecast ‘mini boom’.

While the rest of the world seems to be on a fast track to going mad… the Queensland economy is charging ahead in just about every area.

KPMG’s latest forecast indicates that a commodity ‘mini boom’ will be one of four key areas that drive mining sector growth and productivity into next year; the other three being technology & collaboration; environmental, social & governance (ESG); and Risk Management.

The Queensland Government is the most obvious evidence of this prediction, having released another 5 exploratory sites in the Bowne Basin that total more than 450 square kilometres. All sites have access to existing rail and port infrastructure making any future mining faster and cheaper.

Supporting the technology and collaboration driver, one would need to look no further than the recent BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, who have joined forces with the CQ University and TAFE Qld to launch the Queensland Futures Partnership – designed to fund and facilitate the fast tracked development and delivery of new autonomy related qualifications in Queensland.

While measuring success through ESG policies is an increasingly complex process it is key to attracting top talent and according to global leader in mining Trevor Hart “Going forward, these measures will be attached to executive remuneration and reported.”

And finally, the Risk Management side of things is crucial to ensuring we have a strategy that mitigates the likes of the world going mad, otherwise known as the US China Trade War or Mr Trump’s Tantrums…

We can’t forget that Australia just delivered a record full-year trade surplus on the back of the resources sector, which represented 58 per cent of the nation’s total export revenue – strongly supported by the record breaking $71 billion from Queensland’s resource sector which represented a massive 81.3 per cent of the state’s export earnings for the year.

Queensland Resources Council chief executive Ian Macfarlane recently commented that “Queensland has what the world needs… Queensland is an exporting powerhouse.”

And supporting the entire lot are the small businesses and communities that make it all possible in the first place.  Companies like FleetCrew, who are the largest supplier of mine spec light vehicles and who have offices in Brisbane, Mt Isa, Dysart, and this year have expanded into Mackay.

When we spoke to Ben Harris, Director and Co-Founder, he said “It’s about the people.  Our people really know their stuff and we’ve been doing this for a long while.  They can talk you through what’s required for mine sites, for exploration or even for the weekend if you want to go off-road.”
