Can coal gasification lift the industry out of the doldrums? [video]

It has been no secret that the seaborne coal market has been in steady decline, amid a deep imbalance between supply and demand which has dragged down both thermal and metallurgical coal spot prices to record low levels across the globe.

Add to this some fairly damaging declines in the share prices of major producers and it does not paint a pretty picture.

In this edition of Platts Commodity Pulse, Gareth Carpenter, managing editor for coal, is joined by Ross McCracken, managing editor of Energy Economist, to discuss some of the more innovative methods some coal producers are using to manage ever challenging market conditions, focusing on underground coal gasification (UCG).
