ERA looking to expand

The company behind the Ranger Uranium Mine in Kakadu National Park has told shareholders it hopes to extend the life of the mine beyond its 2021 timeline.

Energy Resources of Australia held its Annual General Meeting in Darwin yesterday.

The company’s chief executive, Rob Atkinson, said there was no plan to extend the life of the mine at this stage, but that could change if further resources are found.

“I think we’ve got an exciting exploration program in the future and really depending on that feasibility, that if there’s efficient ore and that we can work with the key stakeholders, then I think that it would be a desirable option.”

The environment centre’s Justin Tutty was at the meeting and said the comments were disappointing.

“It’s absurd to realise that at a time when the miner should be looking to address their pollution issues in Kakadu, instead they’re focussed on expansion.”
