Enough is enough

The coal industry’s call for up to $10 billion worth of assistance in the face of the impending carbon pollution reduction scheme is far too high, parliamentary secretary for climate change Greg Combet said.

Combet said he wants to ensure that the coal industry is adequately assisted, but that the compensation package that the Government has already offered is sufficient.

“I am especially concerned to make sure that the coal industry is supported,” he said.

“However, the coal industry is making a claim for nearly $10 billion in assistance and that is far too much,” Combet said.

“We are very confident in the Government that the package of $750 million that we have got on the table, if it is correctly targeted, will provide necessary support for the industry.”
