A UNIVERSITY of Queensland researcher is developing technology to trap greenhouse gas emissions in coal mining and power generation.
School of Engineering senior lecturer Dr John Zhu aims to develop a carbon nanotube (CNT) membrane for gas separation.
Zhu said the CNT concept works like a sieve to separate high volumes of methane or carbon dioxide from other gases.
The CNT has the potential to trap moving gases up to 100 times faster than other gas separation techniques, according to Zhu.
“If the technology is successful, it may significantly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases produced through power generation. This is important in Queensland where we are dependent on coal,” he said.
