Death at McArthur River

A worker was killed last Friday at Xstrata’s McArthur River mine in the Northern Territory.

Emergency services received a call from the mine’s health clinic around 5:30pm saying a 20 year old man had died at the zinc-lead-silver mine, located 900 kilometres south-east of Darwin.

Police are yet to release any details as to how the death occurred or where it happened on the mine site.

An Xstrata spokesperson said in investigation is underway and that no further details were being released in the immediate future.

Xstrata Zinc Australia chief operating officer Brian Hearne said that counselling has been made available to workers following the death.

“Our deepest thoughts and sympathy go out to his family, friends and colleagues,” he said.
