BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has confirmed the death of a contractor working at the Goonyella Riverside mine in Queensland following injuries sustained during maintenance activities.
BHP said the contractor, from Independent Mining Services, died yesterday “as a result of injuries sustained in an incident that occurred during maintenance work” on Saturday.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and support to his family, colleagues and friends at this very sad and difficult time,” BHP said.
“A full investigation is underway and BMA will continue to work closely with relevant authorities.”
The company has also put in place support services for family, friends, workers and the contractors involved at the mine.
