SAFETY Authorities have advised mine operators in cyclone-prone areas to err on the side of caution in the design and construction of buildings and other structures, and in the development of emergency plans and procedures.
Given the limited predictability of cyclones in terms of track and intensity, forecasts must be continuously monitored until the threat has completely passed — cyclones can and do ‘backtrack’. This is according to Resources Safety — a division of the WA Department of Consumer and Employment Protection.
For more information on how to reduce hazards from cyclones, see Mines Safety Significant Incident Report No. 148 – Tropical Cyclone George.
