Coates expands large-capacity generator fleet to meet mining demand

Coates is making a significant investment in Australia’s power security, expanding its fleet of mine-spec containerised generators to support mining and heavy industry operations.

The investment will double the size of Coates’ large–capacity generator fleet this year, with further investment planned for the 2026/27 financial year (FY27).

“Across the next 12 months, Coates will effectively triple its existing fleet of high–output gensets, ensuring customers have access to reliable, scalable power wherever and whenever they need it,” Coates group manager – power & HVAC Kurt Edwards said.

The investment responds to growing customer demand for reliable, large–capacity temporary power across construction, mining, heavy industry and utilities – especially where grid constraints, shutdowns and critical maintenance windows leave no room for downtime.

“These new generators give our customers confidence that no matter the site, scale or conditions, Coates can deliver safe, reliable and fully supported power solutions for complex, high–demand environments,” Edwards said.

Coates already offers a range of large–capacity diesel generators, including 500-kilovolt-ampere (kVA) 500, 650kVA and 1250kVA containerised generators. These are supported by turnkey services such as system design, installation, project management, refuelling, transport, maintenance, remote monitoring and 24/7 on–call support.

The expanded fleet of mine-spec 750kVA, 800kVA, 1000kVA and 1250kVA units strengthens this capability, particularly for major industrial, commercial or utility applications requiring synchronised multiunit systems to support critical loads, deliver prime or standby power, and maintain operations during outages or emergencies.

Designed and built to Coates’ specifications, the new generators deliver performance and durability in harsh Australian conditions, with key features including:

• Prime electrical rating with overload capacity
• 110 per cent fully-bunded integral fuel tanks
• 40°C ambient capability (derated up to 50°C)
• Sound-reduced
• Synchronising controllers
• Compatible with B5-B20 biodiesel blends
• Mine-spec construction suitable for mining, heavy industry and remote worksites

The new containerised generators offer a range of customer benefits, including modular design for easy transport, mobilisation and integration into fixed plant, quieter operation, improved fuel efficiency and options for hybrid integration. They also deliver lower operating costs, plug–and–play connectivity and full compliance with Australian Standards.

“Whether it’s a planned shutdown, a remote construction project or contingency for a sensitive facility, customers want confidence that a generator will provide reliable temporary power,” Edwards said.

“With more large gensets available for hire across Coates’ national branch network, we can respond quickly and scale to the task.”

While Australia is accelerating its transition to cleaner energy, large diesel generators remain essential temporary infrastructure, acting as the safety net that keeps hospitals, telecoms, industrial plants and digital infrastructure online when the grid is unavailable, delayed or unstable.

“Large generators are a critical part of energy resilience. They provide the reliability and independence customers need when the grid is unavailable, unstable or still catching up to demand,” Edwards said.
