THE Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) has received New South Wales Government approval to build and operate a 66 Mtpa capacity coal export terminal for the Port of Newcastle.
NCIG said it was hopeful the first ship would be loaded at the terminal in the second half of 2009.
The ship loading facilities will be built to the west of the existing Kooragang ship loaders, with new stockyards and rail facilities to the south-west of the Kooragang Coal Terminal.
The Hunter River will be deepened to allow ships to reach the planned berths to the west of the Kooragang loader.
The approval is subject to more than 90 conditions to protect the environment and amenities for neighbours.
The project is said to increase GDP by $1.5 billion per year, boost exports by $1 billion and generate up to 5,000 jobs across New South Wales.
