Clean emissions technology

THE Emissions Trading Task Group (ETTG) Report has released a framework for emissions trading which it says would allow the Australian minerals sector to play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) has supported the reports recommendations saying it recognised that the only way to reduce emissions while maintaining international growth and development is through technology development.

“With the majority of new emissions projected to come from emerging economies, significant greenhouse gas emission reductions will only occur if low emissions technologies are developed and deployed in these countries,” AusIMM CEO Don Larkin said.

“Meanwhile, more efficient ways of producing key commodities for them need to be brought online,” he said.

“Eighty per cent of Australia’s exports are energy intensive. By developing low emissions technologies for key minerals and energy exports locally, we can have a real effect globally,” said Larkin.
