Carbon capture conference

The stage has been set for this month’s Queensland Resources Exposition following the endorsement of Australia’s Global Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Institute by world leaders at the G8 meeting in Italy, Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche said.

“This is a rare and timely opportunity to take stock of where the world is in relation to the development of low-emission energy technologies,” Roche said.

“It is of major relevance to Queensland as not only the world’s largest seaborne coal exporter but also home to two pilot carbon capture projects and what is expected to be the world’s first new generation coal-fired power station.”

The opening conference at the Queensland Resources Exposition will focus on the global energy outlook and responses to climate change.

The event will feature keynote addresses from the Australian Minister for Resources Martin Ferguson, Charge D’affaires for the Delegation of the European Commission to Australia and New Zealand John Richards and Global CCS Institute chief executive Nick Otter.

The G8 countries made a commitment to have 20 large-scale CCS projects in operation by 2020.
