BMA contracts McConnell Dowell for Hay Point terminal upgrade

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has signed an early contractor involvement (ECI) contract with McConnell Dowell to upgrade the shiploader two and berth two (SABR) project at the Hay Point coal terminal in Queensland.

The SABR project will involve replacing one of the three berths and shiploaders at the coal terminal as they have reached the end of their lives.

The upgrade will not only see the replacement of the fixtures, but also improved operability and storm immunity by way of extension and raising of the berth.

McConnell Dowell will assist with the facility design, planning and completing the construction work as well as estimating and planning for the SABR project.

“McConnell Dowell is thrilled to be partnering with BMA and bringing our leading marine construction expertise to drive innovation and project certainty,” McConnell Dowell stated in a media release.

“In collaboration with BMA and their design engineer Aurecon, McConnell Dowell will work in an integrated project delivery environment to optimise the facility design and construction methodology.”

The project is expected to complete in 2023.
