BHP rolls out Terrain Tamer radiators across Olympic Dam fleet

BHP will replace the radiators across its light vehicle fleet at the Olympic Dam mine in South Australia with Terrain Tamer Heavy Duty radiators following a successful trial.

After almost 12 months of testing, BHP committed to rolling out the pressed aluminium radiators across its fleet of Toyota 79 Series LandCruisers used at the Olympic Dam operation, around 500km north of Adelaide. The rollout will take place over several months.

The heavy-duty radiators feature a fully pressed aluminium design with no welding and an improved fin pitch, providing approximately 8 per cent greater cooling capacity, according to Terrain Tamer. They also incorporate a built-in sensor plug that allows an in-dash warning indicator to alert operators if radiator or hose damage causes a loss of coolant, helping reduce the risk of engine damage.

The trial was facilitated by Outback Mining Services in Port Augusta, a Terrain Tamer dedicated stockist and mining maintenance provider.

Outback Mining Services workshop manager Kenny Garrard said BHP’s decision was driven largely by the durability of the product.

“Decision makers indicated that the high-quality manufacturing of Terrain Tamer’s radiators was one of the things they were most impressed with,” Garrard said.

“The extended lifespan of parts is so important in the light vehicle fleets at mines, and with the Terrain Tamer trial, BHP noted that there was no premature leaking or corrosion of the fins like there had been with others.”

Terrain Tamer already supplies components to BHP’s mining operations. In late 2023, the company said BHP adopted its parabolic springs for a fleet of more than 100 Toyota Hilux vehicles servicing its Pilbara iron ore operations in Western Australia.
