BHP fatality in Pilbara

A BHP Billiton iron ore employee has been killed on the company’s main train line in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

Track machine operator Bill Blake was fatally injured in the accident, which occurred 74 kilometers south of Port Hedland at approximately 3:30am Tuesday morning, BHP spokeswoman Kelly Quirke told MINING DAILY.

BHP’s main rail line operations have been suspended and port operations in the area are being progressively suspended, the company said.

Mining operations are being continued.

The employee fatality is the second in a week for BHP.

The company last week announced the death of John Barker at its Blackwater Mine in Queensland after he was injured in a motor vehicle accident.
