BHP and Fortescue tap Monadelphous for construction contracts

Monadelphous Group has been awarded new construction contracts with BHP and Fortescue valued at approximately $220 million.

The engineering company has received “major multidisciplinary” construction contracts with BHP for its Jimblebar Train Loadout Replacement Project in the Pilbara.

Jimblebar iron ore mine is located 40km east of Newman and is one of five mines and four processing hubs that make up Western Australian Iron Ore, an integrated system of joint ventures connecting 1000km of rail infrastructure and port facilities.

BHP’s share of production since the 2022–23 financial year (FY23) has been 66,801 thousand tonnes of iron ore, with Jimblebar also being home to the company’s first fully autonomous truck operation.

The work is set to be carried out by Monadelphous’ civil and fabrication business and includes earthworks, structural, mechanical, piping and electrical works, as well as offsite fabrication and procurement. Work under the contract is expected to be completed in late 2027, the company said in a statement.

Monadelphous has also been awarded a contract for the construction of Fortescue’s North Star Junction battery energy storage system, supporting the miner’s commitment to decarbonising its Pilbara operations.

More than 196,000 solar panels have already been installed at the site, 26km from the company’s Iron Bridge operations, with construction of a 130-megawatt (MW) Cloudbreak solar farm in March 2025, with 2–3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy generation at battery storage set to be built by 2030.

This, Fortescue said, will eliminate fossil fuels from its iron ore operations in Australia.

WA Mining Conference takes place from October 8–9. Register for the event here.
