Balancing the workforce

A Queensland Resources Council (QRC) survey showing more women are choosing careers in the State’s mineral and energy sectors is an encouraging sign for the industry’s future, QRC chief executive Michael Roche said.

“The upward trend is a pleasing result,” Roche said.

The survey shows that the proportion of women working on non-traditional jobs is 10% in 2007/08, up from 7% in 2006/07.

“When we launched our Women in Resources Action Plan (WRAP) in 2006 we set a target of doubling the proportion of women in non-traditional roles from 6% to 12% by 2020,” Roche said.

“We are still on track to meeting and exceeding that target.”

The WRAP campaign is designed to draw and maintain female employment across all areas of Queensland’s resource sector.

“The campaign is focussed on ensuring that women understand the career opportunities in the sector and that the work environment meets their needs,” Roche said.

“However, women still make up only 11.3% of our total workforce and there is clearly more work to be done to resolve the gender imbalance in our industry.”

Despite the current economic conditions the resources industry should be have qualified and able employees for the future, regardless of gender, Roche said.

“The resources sector has to be ready for the next upswing and this means having sufficient skilled people to enable the industry to prosper and grow,” he said.

“The downturn will not see any slackening in the QRC’s programs to attract and retain women in resource sector careers.”
