Amendments to Mine Safety Laws

QUEENSLAND mines, under new legislation, will be required to report all deaths at mines, not just those resulting from accidents, according to the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy (DME).

According to the DME, changes to the Mining and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2007 were passed on 16 October, 2007, by the Queensland Parliament.

The Mining and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2007 amended the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999, according to DME Chief Inspector of Mines Roger Billingham.

Amendments to these Acts come into effect from 14 December, 2007.

The amendments include increased penalties in line with those in the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, and the appointment of alternate members to Advisory Councils and of the Director-General as chair of the Councils.
