ABB has secured a five year Framework Agreement with Pilbara Iron.
The agreement is estimated to be worth in excess of $150 million for the transmission infrastructure work alone.
The solution will provide Rio Tinto with a stable and reliable supply of energy across its entire network of mines located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
The Framework Agreement will support Rio Tinto’s Power System Upgrade project, to help increase generation, transmission and distribution capacity of the various mine expansion projects being undertaken to meet increased production targets and the growing global demand for iron ore.
ABB will supply solutions and implementation of Pilbara Iron’s High Voltage infrastructure, including all turn-key substation projects from design to commissioning, service and consultancy.
“Over the next 24 months, ABB will be involved in installing three new power station grid connections, replace protection and control rooms within existing substations, as well as conduct rationalisation projects of old assets and service works.” ABB Australia’s vice president power systems Roland Vitelli said.
The first contract awarded under the Framework Agreement was the Paraburdoo 33kV Switchyard rationalisation and supply of an 11/220kV Generator Transformer, which commenced in February.
