WR Carpenter No 1 Pty Ltd a company of The Griffin Group, on behalf of Worsley Alumina, has issued a contract to AE&E Australia for the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a multi-fuel circulating fluidised bed cogeneration power plant to be built at Worsley Alumina’s refinery, near Collie in Western Australia.
AE&E’s scope in the Worsley Alumina New Powerhouse Project is the entire engineering, design, supply and construction of a multi-fuel cogeneration power plant; consisting of two coal and biomass fired 340t/h Circulating Fluidised Bed (CFB) units, two 57 megawatt back pressure steam turbines, all low, medium and high voltage electrics, instrumentation and controls, materials handling, water treatment plant, full balance of plant, all civil works, installation, commissioning and testing.
The multi-fuel CFB units will primarily burn coal, but they will also be able to burn up to 30% biomass (waste wood product).
The steam produced by the plant will be vital to the alumina refining process and any additional power to Worsley’s needs will be able to be exported to the State electricity grid.
