Hughes Drilling wins Fortescue drilling contracts

Hughes Drilling has been awarded grade control drilling contracts for Fortescue’s Solomon Hub iron ore mines.

It will carry out the work through its subsidiary JSW Australia, which it acquired late last year.

This latest award follows on from the commencement, late last year, of its three year contract with Fortescue at its Christmas Creek mine.

The new grade control contract, which will be carried out in a joint venture with Hughes Aboriginal partners Eastern Guruma, will use three drills, and plans to ramp up to five grade control drills with several of the drills operating double shifts, according to the company.

While Hughes declined to state the value of the contract, it is understood that the combined contracts will provide an estimated $25 million in revenue for the 2014 calendar year.

Hughes has also recently begun mine site drilling for the recovery of PQ3 diameter diamond cores at the Christmas Creek mine.
